Letter, J. W. Gray, Jr. to Navy Recruiter, January 20, 1920

This is the (barely) surviving letter that shows Jackie Gray’s desire to be a Marine. It’s a path that would unfortunately lead to his tragic and premature death some two months later in basic training.

Henry County Monument Works Receipt, April 16, 1936

Purchased by Frazier Clifton Gray on April 16, 1936, a monument for the grave of his mother, Ellen Caroline “Nellie” (Scarborough) Gray, for $100. Handwritten note on the back of the receipt indicates that it was paid in full on April 29, 1936.
“Nellie” Gray is buried at the Gray Family Cemetery on Friendship Road [...]

Charged to account of John Williams Gray by Frazier Clifton Gray (his son), $2.85 for “Mdse B. R.”, on May 7, 1909.
Receipt is an advertisement for Dr. Hess’ Stock Food, Worm and Heave Powder, Poultry Pan-a-cea, Healing Powder.
